The Clan Turnbull has its roots in the border area between England and Scotland. The name Turnbull originates, according to the story, from William Roule of Bedrul who saved King Robert the Bruce ca. 1200 from an attacking wild bull. Robert dubbed William Turn-E-Bull and gave him the barony of Bedrule.
The Turnbull name can be traced to 1315 where King Robert bestowed lands to William of Rule, naming him Sir William Turnbull.
